Canadian singer-songwriter May Wells continues to uphold the values of independent artistry through her latest single ‘Cologne’, a striking, sultry track that communicates both angst and power through Wells’ faint, soothing vocals and the subsequent instrumentation.

This Montreal-based artist is no stranger to the art of songwriting and performing: she’d begun working in the music industry seven years ago now, with Wells having led the band The Garlics since 2012 to 2016. In that time, they had not only released three albums and seven radio singles but they had also had the wonderful opportunity to open for bands such as Simple Plan, establishing themselves quite solidly onto the French Canadian music platform.

Wells’ solo career, which officially sprung up in 2016 with the release of a four-track EP We All Want Love, was her foray into English Canadian audiences, who quickly took to her charismatic sensibilities and remarkable musical abilities. One to never shy away from being herself, Wells expresses her frustrations regardless of how raw or brutal they may seem. Buoyed by riffs of clever electric guitar and synth that allow this song to retain a sense of ecstasy and hazy tranquillity, this tune does not intend to mince its words. Wells’ honesty may seem harsh and disarming but ultimately the explicit nature of the song should render it all the more relatable to any scorned listeners out there, feeling a little more than peeved at their exes.

What is the most notable about May Wells’ discography is that she has yet to sign on to a major label or recording company; she still certifies her music as completely independent, which will surely earn her more genuine fans as she attempts to keep her music as authentic and unfettered as possible. Being a champion of women in the music industry, she knows all too well about the challenges associated with working under a major recording label that might restrict the artist from taking risks. Thus, anyone can glean from ‘Cologne’ that May Wells is bursting with pride and self-love, and will thwart anyone that dares to take away her fiery red sunshine.
