Jonathan Roy’s new single ‘Keeping Me Alive’ is the perfect vehicle to catapult him onto the main stages of the music industry: his low, roaring vocals paired with some equally thunderous percussion makes for a chart-busting single his most devoted fans will cherish for years to come.
He grew up training to be a hockey player just like his father, the iconic Patrick Roy, but at the age of eighteen, Roy decides to dip his toe into the space of singing and songwriting, and thus the journey began. Now the thirty-year-old Toronto-based singer-songwriter has been a mainstay in the Canadian music industry for close to a decade, and his latest single proves why he is going to be dominating the charts, the festivals as well as the hearts for much, much longer.
His voice is raw but emotive, abrasive but chilling, blunt but vulnerable, delivering the angst with a whole lot of tenacity and fire. This motif of the flame continues throughout the song as Roy muses on how he has grown and changed, ‘this fire’ being the only thing keeping him alive. He exudes a whole lot of confidence and strength, thwarting his doubters and moving forward with an explosive resoluteness, as conveyed by the incredible arrangement of drums and electric guitar riffs in the chorus. Roy’s vocals express a sort of alternative-rock edginess, a quality that is going to endear his music to a range of listeners across many different styles and genres. Roy has already had the pleasure of having a few of his songs played on the radio but ‘Keeping me Alive’ is built for radio success, its vivacious beat an instant classic that is going to get people swaying their hips and moving their feet.
His co-writers being Brian Howes and Jay Van Poederooyen, Roy has spoken out about how this single represents a turning point in his career.
I would say that this entire experience has cemented my faith in music. The healing power of it, and the need for me to do this my entire life. There is nothing else I want more.”
