William DuVall’s First Solo Album ‘One Alone’ is a Career Standout

With an incredibly distinguished career spanning over three decades as integral parts of bands, music groups and collaborations, singer-songwriter-guitarist William DuVall finally forges his own path in music with his first solo effort---and for longtime fans of this Atlanta native, the wait was worthwhile.
Ahead of his much-awaited first album One Alone, DuVall has released ‘White Hot’, a dashing, sexy, grungy track that showcases his prowess in instrumentation as well as it bolsters his sensitive, vulnerable vocal ability. The fiery, sultry lyrics in conjunction with DuVall’s uncontrollably risky vocal riffs would make any listener blush, as DuVall makes it a point to lend this song its seductive magic through minimal production and instrumentation---doing so much more with very little.
DuVall has spent decades on the stage as part of some of the most captivating acts in the punk scene: from being a co-vocalist and guitarist in Alice in Chains to being the frontman for the supergroup Giraffe Tongue Orchestra to having founded the early 80s’ punk band, Neon Christ, the man certainly knows how to command the stage as well as his audience. ‘White Hot’ is similarly a brave effort in that he, being the expert that he is at working an acoustic guitar for any given purpose, arrests the audience’s attention through some simple, subtle but immensely inviting runs, and not much else. In a day and age where most musicians resort to a battalion of instruments, synthetic beats and heavy production additions, DuVall backs up his extensive experience and wisdom through personalizing what he has always excelled in: some jolly smooth notes and some brilliant plucking of the guitar.
If ‘White Hot’ is anything to go by, the rest of the songs in ‘One Alone’ should be equally as soulful and captivating. The lead single ‘’Til the Light Guides me Home’ is yet another emotionally stunning tune that once again demonstrates DuVall’s moving voice and how he has incorporated the rhythm guitar once again into his musical journey. A tale about hope, fear and determination, DuVall is not afraid of wearing his heart on the sleeve as he ventures further into his path, alone as he may be.
