Cyn’s latest single ‘I Can’t Believe’ is a dreamy, electric homage to Los Angeles--a haven for artists, performers and creatives across the world, and how it has opened up a world of possibilities for a “girl from Michigan”, as Cyn reveals in the second verse.
Channelling a cosmopolitan, electropop energy as conveyed by low-key synth play, some classic riffs on the electric guitar and thundering percussive work, Cyn sings about how her life has turned upside down in the wake of moving to Los Angeles to the degree that she still does not believe it. On top of the heavy instrumentation that allows the song to take on a dimension of dreaminess as well as a groovy vibe belonging to a dance floor at an indie venue, Cyn also intrigues the listeners with clever misdirections and tech effects of her voice. At times, she muffles; sometimes she contorts her voice to be as light as feather, sometimes it rises in waves, going through those pitch fluctuations as if its second nature.
Another impressive element about the track is the level of specificity in the lyrics: they are fully realized and illustrate a scene than a music video ever could. She brings her experiences alive and practically invites her listeners into her journey as she contemplates “tracking Sam back from Santa Monica”. It is a brilliant ode to California, and the significant role it has been playing in lifting her up to reach the heights and fulfil those dreams she has been developing her whole life. She was personally recruited by pop sensation Katy Perry, who signed her on to her label ‘Unsub Records’ after being stunned by her audition on American Idol. She portrays the same level of class, sensuality and cheeky magic that Katy Perry possessed in droves during the beginning of her career.
Speaking on her single, Cyn says:
“It comes from a very genuine place. I wrote the song a while ago, but I listen to it now and I’m just so thankful that I wrote something that really captured that feeling. It’s not easy to caption a moment. I hope that the world agrees with me, but I think I did it.”
It is a lovely, humble sentiment that displays why Cyn would not be falling out of love with Hollywood quite yet.
