UK Radioplayer Internet Service Reaches 5 Million Listeners

The latest wave of internet radio is proving a great success. For the first time since its launch in March this year statistics about listener numbers for the new Radioplayer service show that more than five million users are tuning into the Radioplayer each month. This means there is a positive trend towards people listening to the radio on the internet.
The Radioplayer has brought together all UK radio stations into one pace on the internet and combines both commercial and BBC radio stations.
Andrew Harrison, the chairman of Radioplayer said: “This is a really encouraging first set of figures.”
The data shoed that during the month of May there were more than 22.5 million listening sessions across the 238 stations that make up the Radioplayer.
The system was fist introduced this year to make listening to UK radio stations a more user friendly experience on the internet.
In the UK more than five million people tune in to listen to the radio via the internet each week and these listeners are being targeted by the Radioplayer.
It seems that the Radioplayer is proving to be a popular choice with the listeners and also with UK radio stations as since its launch a further 81 stations have joined the site with Andrew Harrison claiming that all 400 Ofcom licensed stations will become part of the system within the next 12 months.
While the larger stations are happy with the site, changes are being made to make it easier for smaller radio stations to be able to join the Radioplayer: “We look forward to building on this foundation to create something that serves both industry and listeners alike,” said Andrew Harrison.
Michael Hill, the managing director of Radioplayer added: “Growing digital radio is a long game, but we now have two magic ingredients. A simple, consistent Radioplayer with millions of users and an industry working collaboratively on its digital future. It's a great start.”
With the massive use of the internet today, many predict that services like this could maybe lead to the end of listening to radio, through 'radio waves'.
