Pop songstress Gabrielle Aplin continues rollicking along the musical joyride with her latest single ‘Like You Say You Do’ off her upcoming album Dear Happy set to be released on January 17th, 2020.

It is an infectious, funky and charming tune that combines the most captivating attributes of Aplin’s songwriting profile. Her inclination towards adopting a vast swath of percussive beats to balance out her silky, robust voice is evident in the first verse, where she enlists a combination of triangles, cymbals, tambourines, and manual snaps to inject some bluster into this fiery track. The track functions as an amusing but strong-willed ultimatum to her lover, as she demands that they make more of an effort into showing how much they care about her. It is cheeky, it is brimming with swagger and every now and then, Aplin reveals bits of the vulnerability that has made her the enchanting, relatable artist she stands today.  

The new album is already looking to be a standout in Aplin’s career, which has thus far included two successful studio-backed EPs, the founding of her own record label Never Fade Records, various spreads at fashion magazines such as Vogue and GQ, a promising modelling contract, numerous crowd-winning gigs at illustrious music festivals including Glastonbury, amongst other notable achievements. Yet her upcoming album Dear Happy narrows her focus towards what has always been a long-lasting passion in her life: music. It is a product of all her soulful experiences she has acquired over the years touring and performing at some of the most alluring venues across the world. It also marks a moment of maturity, where Aplin wants to grow both as a musician as well as an individual, exploring a range of genres and styles that she has not previously dabbled in. 

Speaking on this single, Aplin says:

I’m so happy to release my next single ‘Like You Say You Do’. I wrote it with Lostboy and Lauren Aquilina. This song is inspired by how differently you can portray your life and relationships on social media compared to real life. How you can say one thing online, and not follow it through in your real life.”

Subsequently, the video must be applauded for how well it renders the themes of the song, mainly in terms of the aesthetic, the character work and the double-sided function of social media that allows individuals to portray their lives as completely different from reality. It is a brave effort from Aplin that demonstrates how she is willing to tackle complex ideas in her music videos, and that in turn makes her more complex and dynamic as an artist.
