Throughout her relatively recent but illustrious career, Hannah Diamond has always made it a point to craft fascinating, insightful and visually exuberant works of art that detail the challenges of living in this crazed, digital world.

Music has only been one of the many mediums employed by this versatile British artist, who has carved up quite a reputation for herself as a notable visual artist, photographer, and fashion icon. Her latest single ‘Invisible’ once again performs a balancing act as being a sentimental melody on a broken relationship as well as futuristic, virtual tech-inspired contemplation on identity, relationship, and social media.

Once again, exploring the delicate realms of virtual reality, internet celebrity, and social isolation, Diamond invokes a plethora of motifs to set the tone for her song and subsequent music video; from the flittering probe lightning to the chaotic dissonance of screens clashing against each other to Diamond’s representation being drowned out by the mayhem of light and sound, Diamond injects a whole lot of meaning and purpose into every single shot of the music video. The hallmark of a true artist is evident in how she single-handedly sits at the helm of creating mesmerizing stories that take on ideas larger than itself.

What is even more significant in the context of this song is how it manages to be both futuristic and retro; as Diamond muses on pining over her ex-lover, the dreamy synth in the background begins to pick up in intensity and volume, speeding up as it reaches a music crescendo in the chorus. The themes of the song may seemingly reflect on being lonely in the wake of a break-up but Diamond has revealed that it is also based on the collective feeling of isolation that occurs behind computer and smartphone screens, where humans feel both incredible connected but strikingly alone. “I am perpetually surrounded by screens and on display for everyone to see, but paradoxically feel completely invisible to the one person who I wish would notice me,” said Diamond. These are brave, bold concepts that Diamond delves into, which not only make her more distinguished as a musician but more fascinating as an artist.
