Haim’s latest song ‘Now I’m In It’ is a low-key, captivating and smooth jam, a dance number that showcases why Haim are beginning to solidify their status as dance music maestros.
Buoyed by a repetitive hook of the synth and a solid bassline arrangement that keeps steady over the course of the song, the sisters possess tremendous, striking personalities that are conveyed through their vocals and mannerisms. They have gained a cult following in the past few years, receiving particular attention for their old-school rock vibe, sometimes mixed with funk-pop rhythms that really take off in their studio efforts as well as their collective charisma that is on full display in any one of their live performances: they are dashing, they are bold, they are passionate about their music.
‘Now I’m In It’ is a song founded upon the frenzy of lovesickness, of loneliness, of simultaneous convulsions of panic and pain, yet the sound of the piece is far from morose; it is dreamy, reflective and reminiscent of juicy, pop-rock classics of the eighties. Singer Danielle Haim’s vocal performance is measured but powerful; their production employs a variety of background vocal chirps and effects to enhance the electric fantasies expressed through the pulsating beat. The music video is yet another stylistic wonder; sun-soaked, heat-frazzled and disorienting, it depicts the girls in various states of distress and confusion, whether it is being stretchered through the streets of Los Angeles or baked to madness in a sauna. However, it ends on a positive note, with the sisters settling into easy-going conversations at the bar, feeling refreshed, renewed and up for it. Much like the rest of their works in their discography, Haim bring their signature style into this single, injecting it with their robust energy, their inclination for a wide variety of instruments and production techniques and smooth, relatable lyrics that get at the heart and the dance floor.
Although a new album has not been announced yet, the band has confirmed that new music is certainly in the works. Speaking on their genre influences, they say:
What rock bands don’t understand about us, is that we make fun of ourselves; we love to have fun but sometimes that makes people think we don’t take music seriously.”
