Review: Fred Again - Me (Sorry)

Fred Again has an impressive track record as a producer and artist in his own right, working with acts like Ed Sheeran and Stormzy to name a few. Me (sorry) is a calm electronic number, that whilst as up to date as you would expect from one of the UKs top producers, it could also come from the late 90s trance scene, with a soft, slow synth feeling the way.

The sampled drum at the beginning gets your head bobbing from the word go, with emaculate transitions between phrases, which have distinct parts to play in the track. The use of different instruments to breakup the main vibe of the song are interplayed with vocal samples and give great variety, whilst at the same time give the song meaning.

After hearing this a couple of times, you feel like you’ve known it for years. The sentiment in the repeated sample, where a man can be heard saying ‘I really miss you’ along with the looped ‘I’m sorry’ which is cleverly edited slightly differently each time takes the song to another level. The balance between the instruments and the subtlety of the samples give mystery, it tells a story that we as the listener can only guess at, but that the artist has complete control over.

What Me (sorry) does, is it shows a real diversity in the armoury of Fred Again, which hopefully will mean more solo productions from him, that will showcase the skills and variety of music that this producer can make. If you listen to it, make sure you don’t just listen once, listen again and again and you’ll hear just how smart this record is.
