Becky Hill’s ‘Better Off Without You’ is the perfect musical concoction to shaking off the dead weight as we ring in the new decade.

As usual, Hill’s immeasurably big voice powers the tune, transforming it from a customary house dance number to something much more spiritually and emotionally compelling. Shift K3Y features as the partner producer on the track, yet his choices with regard to the arrangement serve to accompany and bolster Hill’s vocal performance. Being a former contestant on the UK version of The Voice, Hill knows all too well how she can attune her voice to fit the rhythms of the song, and undeniably her voice is the most significant aspect of the song. It is deep, reflective and sensational, moving to the synth beat in the background and perfectly complementing the bass drops and machines as included by Shift K3Y.

Hill has grown as one of the brightest artists in the British music industry in recent years, her ascent from being a contestant on the Voice to featuring alongside some of the most exciting acts in contemporary times has been steep. Since her exit from the semi-final round of The Voice, she has collaborated with artists and producers such as Matoma, Jonas Blue, Sigala and Goodboys, all of whom have become mainstays in the club dance scene. Her debut album Get To Know released in 2019 garnered a warm reception in the industry, with many of the singles and collaborations receiving extended streamplay and success in the charts. ‘Better Off Without You’ delves into themes of self-love, acceptance and displaying strength in the face of loneliness and manipulation. It is a break-up anthem of sorts and the dynamic productions help give it an extra bite.

It is simply a perfect melody and message to take into the new year, and Becky Hill demonstrates her artistry by daring to take risks like these. Speaking on her journey as a musician, she says;

People know about me now where I felt like two or three years ago I was still pretty much unknown – people knew the songs but they didn’t know the name or the face behind it.”
