In ‘Birthday’, Anne-Marie Does Not Stop Celebrating Herself

Anne-Marie’s latest single ‘Birthday’ serves as a profound anthem for self-empowerment packaged within an exquisite, pink-drenched aesthetic appropriate of a special day.

Anne-Marie has been praised previously for her brash, catchy sound, where she employs a wide variety of electronic effects-- subtle, nostalgic instrumentation that allows her music to remain fresh, lively and deeply relatable.

Here, she once again lets her rugged, abrasive voice convey a winning attitude, an attitude that is as charming as it is intimidating. The themes of the track may be presented around the occasion of a birthday but they extend far beyond one particular day or feeling.

The lyrics detail the forces of power, strength, and self-belief that allow Anne-Marie to grow year and year, her evolution far more expansive than silly birthday parties. Yet Anne-Marie leans into the levity of the modern birthday party unapologetically. The accompanying music video of the song is a pretty picture in pink, what with Anne-Marie’s hair, her dress, the mansion popping in the soothing, delicate color of pastel pink.

From dancing against stone statues to gorging on a tall stack of pancakes, Anne-Marie does not hold back from basking in the glory of her party. There is something specifically regal about owning your birthday, and Anne-Marie is a crown away from being a jovial, cheeky party princess.

The single is being featured as part of the British singer-songwriter’s upcoming second album to be released in 2020. Her first studio album Speak Your Mind launched at least seven hit singles, with the singer becoming a household name in the UK.

Her collaborations with the likes of Sean Paul, Ed Sheeran, Marshmellow helped her establish herself into the pop scene, where she will be hoping to set new records with the second album. She has revealed that the upcoming album will also feature a handful of collaborations, with Anne-Marie already having confirmed a track or two with fellow British sensation Ed Sheeran.

Anne-Marie has also revealed that she saw a tarot card reader who had some interesting predictions to share. “We went over to the tarot cards and she was like, ‘All I see next year is your career and your life just being a massive roller coaster. It’s going to go insane. This trip has been very important to your writing. Whatever you’ve done on this trip has been so important to your career’.” In that case, her fans will be awaiting her upcoming album with some high expectations!
