Massachusetts metalcore legends Killswitch Engage are doing their part for charity by taking the concept of recycling to a whole new level.
Solving the dilemma of what to do with all those tracks that didn’t quite make the cut for their eighth studio album “Atonement,” released last year, the quintet have come out with “Atonement II B-Sides for Charity.” For those who remember “Atonement,” you’ll recall that it was one of the most polished and impressive releases the band has offered to date. We saw a masterful blend of the old and familiar with a new, edgier sound that appealed to seasoned and fledgling fans alike.
It’s not hard to see why some songs didn’t achieve a glorious place on “Atonement.” When an album is this good, logic tells us that the band must have gone through a careful process of scrutiny to make sure they were only putting out the very best. But admittedly, after listening to “Atonement II,” there’s no doubt the guys struggled with deciding which tracks to keep and which to leave aside. These B sides don’t feel like throwaway efforts at all. Each retains the gritty power and raw energy that has become Killswitch’s trademark and there is no denying the sheer skill and technical prowess of their musical ability.
Lead singer Jesse Leach hooks us instantly with every note, his strong, growling vocals uttering the poignant lyrics that have so much more to say than most other comparable metalcore bands. Adam Dutkiewicz and Joel Stroetzel are, as always, magic on the guitars, that delicious mix of independent sound and blissful harmonies are a treat for the ears and the soul. Rounded out beautifully with Mike D’Antonio on bass and Justin Foley on drums, we are blessed with a rhythm section that crashes into us so hard, we physically feel it.
“Atonement” was a great album, there’s no denying that. But “Atonement II B-Sides for Charity” shows us that even the tracks they deemed less worthy, are still a fantastic treat for metalcore fans. And that fact that 100% of the benefits will go towards supporting the Centre for Disease Philanthropy just gives us even more incentive to get our hands on this wonderful release.
