Green Day Release Blondie Cover

American rockers Green Day have released a cover of the Blondie track, “Dreaming.” This fun, poppy track lends itself wonderfully to the band’s signature punk pop style.
They’ve previously cited the Kinks as being one of their influences and you can really hear it on this one, arguably more so than most of their other offerings. It has an old school feel to it, a throwback to the pop rock songs from the 60s and 70s. Blondie released the track in 1979 during the height of their fame, so it was almost inevitable the number would become a hit. Just as inevitable, was it being covered by other bands and Green Day are not the first to put their own spin on it.
“Dreaming” has also been done by The Smashing Pumpkins, Say Sue Me, West End Girls, The Posies and Amy Speace. All very worthy tributes, to say the least. But Green Day’s version somehow feels the timeliest and apt. The song is about distance in love not mattering as lovers can always meet each other in their dreams. A sentiment no doubt being felt by many during this current pandemic when many are forced to be kept apart from one another.
This new offering from the band comes a mere three months after the release of their last studio album “Father of all Motherf**krs” so it has come as something of a surprise to fans. The latest announcement from lead singer Billie Jo Armstrong had come in early April, when he reported he had written some new material that he intended to record with the band after the COVID-19 crisis had ended. News on when the group actually recorded this latest one has yet to be revealed, but many artists have recently taken to recording things in separate locations and later blending into a seamless song. It is possible Green Day has followed this process also.
“Dreaming” is a fantastic cover version and sends such a beautiful message during these challenging times for everyone.
