Concert 2021 - Are Virtual World Music Festivals The Future?

Emerging out of San Francisco this weekend brings an unusual yet interesting application which lets music fans attend concerts virtually by an avatar. Users can walk round by using their keyboard arrows to control their avatar, bump into each other, buy beer and shout random words by keyboard input.

We first saw wired.com reporting about this bizarre application. apparently its meant to be a tongue in cheek dig about letting one company control excessive ticket space.

When you first visit the website (http://concert2021.com/) it looks like you have stepped back in time 20 years graphics wise. You can barely control your avatar and its so pix-elated that it nearly gives you a headache. You can start moving your avatar around fading in and out of  different songs, as if you were really at a festival.

Concert 2021 also has a host of annoying features, which can only be thought to be made like that on purpose. The music is powered by Sound Cloud

The exact description of the application according to http://wiki.musichackday.org/index.php?title=Concert_2021 is: “In the year 2021 a major Ticket Corporation has taken over the world, and all good concerts will have to be virtual,”

You can control your avatar by using the following instructions

  • Use the arrow keys to move around the festival grounds.
  • Use the "a" and "d" keys to move your hands to rawk out.
  • Use "t" to talk.
Concert 2021 was made in 24 hours for Music Hack Day San Francisco. Could this be the start of something new in the future for music festivals? Probably not, however some people think that with virtual online worlds increasing in popularity, it shouldn't be totally ruled out. Attempts have been made in the past by virtual world platforms to include music and virtual concerts.

In addition to virtual worlds the use of avatar generators has increased to create avatars. Be it a simple cartoon like face to more sophisticated 3D characters, people love to be part of virtual scenes.
