Indie stalwarts Doves have confirmed that their first studio album for 11 years will be released on September 11th through EMI Records.

The follow up to 2009’s Kingdom of Rust is titled The Universal Want, and is preceded by lead single Carousels, which is available now.

The artwork for the new release comes from Finnish photographer Maria Lax. Composed of twin brothers Jez Williams (guitar, vocals) and Andy Williams (drums, vocals), and Jimi Goodwin (bass, vocals, guitar), the band released four albums between 2000 and 2009. Of those, 2002’s The Last Broadcast, which spawned signature hits There Goes the Fear and Caught by the River, and 2005’s Some Cities both reached number one in the UK albums chart. Kingdom of Rust peaked at number two in the UK albums chart. A best of record entitled The Places Between: The Best of Doves was released in April 2010.

In 2014, Goodwin released his first solo record Odludek and the Williams brothers formed a new band, Black Rivers. But after their hiatus, the band reunited in 2019 for a series of live shows and started working together on their new album.

Writing on their official Facebook page, the band said: “The album has got the stamp of ‘the time’ all over it. Everything on the album is an echo. It’s an echo of what we were going through at the time. Getting back together, the Royal Albert Hall and everything else.”

If Carousels is an early indication of what The Universal Want offers, expect more of Doves trademark soaring indie rock with their distinctive psychedelic undertones and Goodwin’s distinctive Manchester-accented vocals.
