After fifteen long years, heavy metal fans have been stunned by legendary American quartet, System of a Down, dropping new music. Prior to this, their last release had been 2015’s “Hypnotize.”

Comprised of guitarist Daron Malakian, drummer John Dolmayan, bassist Shavo Odadjian, and lead vocalist Serj Tankian, System cited several issues that had prevented them from getting back in the studio. They were not shy about admitting there had been conflicts and differences of opinion between band members which was interfering with their creative process and motivation to make new stuff.

So, what did it take to inspire these guys to make new music? A literal war. All band members are of Armenian descent and were deeply moved by the news that war had broken out in Nagorno-Karabakh between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The region has a history of conflict between the two nations, being in Azerbaijan, but comprising of mainly Armenian people. In 1994, the area was officially ruled as belonging to Armenia. But in September, Azerbaijan president Ilham Aliyev moved to change that, declaring war once more.

System of a Down are understandably devastated by this development, and the atrocities being committed against their ancestors’ homeland and its people. So, they have responded the way an iconic band would, with music. The group have released two new singles, “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” voicing their anguish at what is happening in Azerbaijan.

As if the poignant and incredibly important messages being conveyed with these songs was not motivation enough to get people listening and take notice, these tracks are nothing short of incredible. System of a Down have long wowed with their technical mastery, brilliant song construction and epic lyrics, and these are no exception. These guys are talented, driven, and these new offerings prove they have lost none of their edge in their fifteen-year absence.

The group have stated they hope their new music helps bring awareness to the horrors happening overseas and encourages people to speak out. Their passionately emotive lyrics paint the most vivid and terrifying pictures, you will find it impossible to not feel like you need to do or say something in response. Do yourself and give these new songs a listen today. All proceeds made from these tracks will support the Armenia Fund.
