Mariah Carey Says Covid Lockdowns Helped Her Voice

Pop diva Mariah Carey has spoken about the positive impacts the COVID-19 pandemic has had for her. Rather than lamenting on the stressors of lockdowns, she has chosen to focus on the benefits of being forced to stay home since March, commenting that her voice and her health are better than they ever have been.

Speaking on Ahmir Thompson’s Questlove Supreme podcast, she explained:

"Taking off work has really helped my voice. I think in a lot of ways, just being able to have, like, stress-free... And everyone's like, 'Oh, you've got to get back in a studio... You gotta, like, get back to singing'. And I'm like, 'I know'... When I'm under pressure... every part of my voice is screwed up."

Many artists have continued working during lockdowns, taking to Zoom to record new work and even perform virtual tours. And while Carey has done some virtual music making here and there, such as her performance in “The iHeart Living Room Concert for America,” it seems she has focused more on making the best of a bad situation, taking the opportunity to earn herself a much-needed rest, and put her health and own well-being first.

"Honestly, for me this whole year with COVID and everything, not having to sing for my supper and travel around and not get the right amount of sleep or just be put on this thing where there's a certain amount of stress, for me, that takes away a lot of stuff.”

It seems to have worked, with Carey reporting that giving her voice a break has resulted in her vocals becoming even stronger. And the pop legend does not seem to need to rely on making new music to continue enjoying success, with her 1994 hit “All I Want for Christmas is You,” soaring up the charts over the festive season. It even took out the number one spot in the UK, a feat it was not able to achieve upon its initial release, losing the crown to East 17’s “Stay Another Day.”

In October 2020, she released “The Rarities,” a fun compilation piece, featuring B sides, and some previously unreleased session work. While there is no word yet on when we can expect new music from Carey, it is a safe bet to say she will continue keeping us entertained, even throughout lockdowns.
