Joseph Reuben has battled against the odds to commence his solo career. He first came to attention several years ago with his soulful take on Robyn’s ‘Call Your Girlfriend’. But just as he began to build traction, he required emergency surgery which resulted in the devastating news that he may never sing again. Instead he channelled his talents into a successful vocation as a score composer for film, TV, theatre and ballet. But after years of gruelling vocal rehabilitation, Joseph is now able to step back into the spotlight and focus on his long overdue solo work.
After recently releasing the introductory ‘Life In Colour’ track which was highlighted by Cool Hunting, Joseph Reuben today shares his first official single ‘DREAMLAND’. He wrote and produced the song, which was completed with mixing courtesy of Goetz Botzenhardt (Björk, Pet Shop Boys) and some lyrical tweaks from his brother, the artist David King Reuben. Joseph collaborated on its string arrangement with Thomas Rousell.
‘DREAMLAND’ is the sound of a remarkable new artist who is emerging with everything needed to make a phenomenal impact. His cinematic skills are very much in evidence, as evocative strings flourish and soar alongside plaintive piano and beats which are powered by a theatrical intensity. It’s a talent that perfectly fits his broader approach, a leftfield take on modernist alt-pop informed by nostalgic songwriting and a dash of R&B flavour. But most impressive of all is that voice. His masterly command of tender highs and unmistakable emotions feels like an entirely natural talent, rather than one that he has had to fight to save.
A multifaceted singer, songwriter and producer Joseph Reuben was born between London, and now splits much of his time between there, New York City and Los Angeles. He found himself in demand soon after turning his attention to composing, with highlights including crafting an orchestral version of Tyla Yaweh’s hit ‘High Right Now’ for the film ‘GULLY’, which was directed by Nabil (The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, Kanye West); creating music for fashion campaigns featuring Daisy Lowe and Dita Von Teese; and even a special royal-approved production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ that was performed at Windsor Castle.
Jon Hopkins, Max Richter and Clint Mansell were key influences for his composition work, but Joseph has broadened his scope for his solo work to encompass the likes of James Blake, SG Lewis, Rex Orange County and Troye Sivan. A further insight into his reference points can be seen with his recent ‘Life In Colour’ playlist.
Late last year, Joseph launched the month-long Song A Day project. Each day he would write and demo a new song and share the results with fans, who were invited to vote for which songs they thought should be developed further and released. The project showcases his versatility, with songs that ranged from layered electronica-orientated productions to stripped back voice-and-piano compositions.
Joseph Reuben is confirmed to play this summer’s Wilderness Festival, which runs from August 5th-8th. He joins a bill that includes Jamie xx, Loyle Carner, Rudimental and many more.
