ZZ Top. A band so iconic, so legendary, everybody knows who they are. Gifting us with timeless hits like "Legs," "La Grange," "Sharp Dressed Man," and "Gimme All Your Lovin," they have forever carved out their place in musical history. Their big beards, sunglasses, and hats have become just as recognisable as their music, but these guys were never a gimmick. Their proficiency and talent as musicians and songwriters is why they have stood the test of time.

Fans and the musical world have therefore been immensely shocked and saddened by the tragic news that ZZ Top bassist, Dusty Hill, passed away on Wednesday at age 72. He reportedly died in his sleep at his home in Houston, Texas. Cause of death has not been formally announced; however, it is known that Hill was hospitalised earlier this month, the band announcing he had an issue with his hip. Elwood Francis, ZZ Top's long-time technician, took over bass duties for a series of scheduled live performances. This marked the first time Hill had not played bass with the band in over 50 years. The band announced that Francis would now become Hill's permanent replacement, following his death.

Hill lived and breathed music. He started playing with his brother, Rocky Hill, and friend Frank Beard back in the 1960s. Beard would later become a fellow member of ZZ Top. Rocky Hill sadly passed away in 2009 at age 62 of a medical condition. In 1969, Hill and Beard were joined by guitarist and vocalist Billy Gibbons and ZZ Top was officially born.

The band have enjoyed a career now spanning five decades. Their most recent studio release, "La Futura," came in 2012, and they were said to be planning a new studio album in 2019. There has been no more confirmed news on this development, however there are rumours that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted these plans. With ZZ Top intending to continue the band with Francis on bass, time will tell if fans have another album to look forward to.

Hill is survived by his wife, Charleen McCory and their daughter. And he has left us with an incomparable legacy of music, featured in films, television, games, and advertisements. ZZ Top's unique brand of easily digestible, party rock, has seen them enjoyed by fans of all ages and all generations. Their fun, personable, and relaxed stage presence, were always a true joy to behold. Hill may be gone, but the music will go on.
