The music world was stunned recently by country music legend Dolly Parton turning down a nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Ever the lady, she was graceful in declining the offer, making the following statement on her social media:
"Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated… I don't feel that I have earned that right… so I must respectfully bow out."
Parton went on in her statement to explain that she feared her being in the running would cause votes to become unfairly split, so chose to withdraw to ensure the nod would go to someone, in her view, who was more deserving.
Her fans were reeling from the news, offering messages of support on social media:
“You are worthy of this award and so many more."
“You deserve it! You are one of the most prolific and talented songwriters of all time!”
“You have been worthy for a long time!”
Disappointment from her fans aside, Parton has garnered support from other artists. Her respectful withdrawal from the race has also prompted some controversy around how the Hall of Fame chooses which artists to honour.
Judas' Priest's Richie Faulker spoke out in support of Parton in a recent podcast:
"I think it was a classy move, really. I think she recognizes her brand, and it didn't necessarily fit into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And I think it raises questions to what the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's brand is as well."
He then went on to criticise the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:
"To call it the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and not have bands like Judas Priest in it from day one, I think, is a weird thing… maybe it shouldn't be called the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I don't know."
Faulkner raises an interesting point, considering some of the other nominees this year include Eminem, Kate Bush, and Eurythmics. All stellar performers and icons in their own right, but definitely not fitting within the "rock and roll" genre.
Semantics aside, Faulker seems to be echoing Parton's hesitation. The legendary country music star also said in her statement that while she is turning down the nomination, she remains hopeful at being considered again in the future. And added some exciting news for fans:
'This has, however, inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock 'n' roll album at some point in the future, which I have always wanted to do! 'My husband is a total rock 'n' roll freak, and has always encouraged me to do one."
