The Novelty X Factor? Rylan Controversy Continues

In previous years, the X Factor has thrived in its constant bid for ratings by constantly trying to push the boundaries of controversy and so far, this year has been no exception.

From the outrageous comments made by new judge Nicole Scherzinger to the diva strops of veteran Gary Barlow and the ever present accusations of rigged voting, the X Factor has most certainly come out on fighting form.

As ever, the controversy doesn't end when the cameras stop rolling on a Sunday night with rants on Twitter aimed at attacking contestants only serving to boost ratings even more.

Without a doubt, the person who has caused the largest split in public opinion this year has been contestant Rylan Clark. Like Jedward and Wagner before him, he has largely been portrayed as a novelty act but the outspoken Essex boy has vehemently defended his position throughout the competition assuring mentor Scherzinger during the judges houses section that he is serious about his position.

That being said, week one he performed an Egyptian interpretation of Spandau Ballet’s classic inspirational hit Gold, much to the horror of straight laced Barlow and in subsequent weeks, has performed elaborate mash ups including samples of songs from “Gangnam Style” to “I see you baby”.

Following him being saved from elimination in week one, he was attacked on Twitter by people believing that judge Louis Walsh had been told how to vote ensuring that Carolynne Poole was sent home. Since then, whether good or bad, the British public has been talking nonstop about Rylan and what he will do next on the show.

Hot topic of conversation has been Barlow’s reaction to Rylan’s performances. After his storming off set in the first week, the public has been waiting to see how he will respond next. Dubbed as Gary “Borelow” by Scherzinger and spoken against by off/on friend and colleague Robbie Williams, his public image has definitely taken a beating.

This of course seems to be having a negative effect on the public’s perception of Barlow’s remaining acts which can only serve to improve Rylan’s chances.

What is certain is that this year’s show is going to continue to push the boundaries of, in Rylan’s case at least, taste and decency. The fact is that the British public love a good novelty act and whether he likes it or not, Rylan is being portrayed in that way. So love him or hate him just remember, Jedward weren’t eliminated until week seven and just look how they’ve done since they were in the X Factor.

We can only wait and see what tonight's X-Factor has in store for us, some reports are already saying that Rylan's performance tonight could be 'dangerous'.

What are your thoughts on Rylan and whether the X-Factor is becoming a 'novelty' show?
