Unless you've been living in a cave and not had access to YouTube for the last few months, you've probably already become swept up in the revolution that is Psy and his viral hit Gangnam Style.

Originally uploaded to YouTube for the first time on 15th July 2012, it quickly became one of the most viewed songs on the entire site and is now officially the most “liked” K-pop video.

In case you weren't aware, K-pop is a genre of music originating in Psy’s home country of South Korea and until now has largely been confined in its popularity to Korea. Of course, through the magic of social networking, the phenomenon has quickly spread and has now hit the actual singles charts in hundreds of countries across the globe. Not bad considering that “Gangnam style” itself refers rather personally to the Gangnam district of Soeul, South Korea.

Not content with taking over the charts, Psy has recently been invited to the UN to meet with secretary general Ban-Ki Moon. The pair met to discuss how they can work together on global issues. Hopefully, that will involve the invisible horse dance because what world issues couldn't be solved by that?

So what exactly has made Gangnam Style so popular in such a short space of time? Well, like the Macarena and Saturday Night before it, the world loves a good catchy song that just won't get out of your head and that you can do a crazy dance to. Steps based their entire career on it. That, coupled with a hilarious video that just refuses to lose it's novelty has ensured that Gangnam Style is going to be around for a while yet.
