Devon Cole is a 24-year-old alternative pop artist from Toronto, Canada. She is about to embark on a short tour as the opening act for Valley.
We all have demons that hold us back from time to time. Sometimes we need extra help to shake off those issues, and Devon Cole has written a love song addressing her partner, who she wants to spend time with but can't until she sorts herself out at rehab. With that as the premise of the song, there is a real honesty and humbling narrative to the words that create a sense of respect for the singer, but at the same time, a real sense of sympathy.
"Call You After Rehab" is a song with a simplicity and purity to the arrangement that adds to the overall effect. The first few sections are just vocals and a plucked string instrument. The song then builds with layers and more vocal lines towards the end, but it never loses its honesty as a creation. One thing I really liked was the dryness of Devon Cole's voice in terms of production. By that, I mean it wasn't lost in reverb, it stayed true to the actual sung parts without being overproduced, which adds to the authenticity and is a strong selling point.
