Robbie Williams has got himself into trouble after punching a pensioner in the video for his number one single Candy.

Activists for the National Pensioners Convention (NPC) have criticized Williams over the video but also for joking about the scene during an interview with Graham Norton.

When told that the image was shocking, Williams replied “they wanted me to kick a dog and I'm an animal lover, so I was just not having that. Then they said: ‘Punch a pensioner’ and I was like ‘Yeah, I'm in’”.

In a statement about the incident, NPC general secretary Dot Gibson said: “Celebrities should think twice before making ageist comments which seem to imply that pensioners should be treated in a degrading way. Elder abuse is a serious issue and needs to be tackled rather than seen as a bit of a joke.  Pensioners are just young people who grew older.''

A representative of Robbie was quick to emphasise that he didn't condone violence in any way and no harm was intended by the star.
