Phoenix-based alternative duo MRCH is ushering in a new era as they unveil their latest single, "Stars Align," following their performances alongside renowned acts like CHVRCHES and Foster The People. The track serves as a tantalizing glimpse into their upcoming EP, titled 'TV Bliss,' which is slated for release in the autumn. This EP marks their first release under a fresh agreement with The Vertex.
Blending the energetic drive of alt-rock with the polished allure of synth-pop, "Stars Align" showcases the extraordinary vocal prowess of Mickey Pangburn, the band's vocalist and guitarist. Pangburn's captivating voice elevates the song to another level, evoking a simultaneous sense of joy, escapism, and catharsis. However, beneath the surface, a simmering dark undercurrent lingers, infusing the track with an edgy and unsettling tone.
According to Mickey, the song reflects the idea that one can't control much beyond their response to a situation, a valuable lesson she has been learning. "Stars Align" delves into the concept of regaining a sense of personal agency amidst chaos and not relying on rescue.
Accompanying the single is an official music video, directed by Mickey herself. Constructed through meticulous green screening, the video presents a performance piece with a unique blend of artificial and realistic aesthetics. Its surreal textures reminiscent of Michel Gondry's 'The Science of Sleep' intertwine with the fractured fuzz of '90s cable television, creating an intriguing visual experience. You can watch the official video below.
During the creation of the 'TV Bliss' EP, Mickey and her bandmate, Jesse Pangburn (drums/production), embraced a profound level of collaboration for the first time. They received support and feedback from Jim Adkins, the frontman of Jimmy Eat World. The project was further enriched through mixing by Grammy-nominated Tony Hoffer (known for his work with Depeche Mode, Metric, and Chromeo) and mastering by Dave Cooley (noted for his contributions to Wolf Alice, Tame Impala, and Paramore).
The themes and overall aesthetic of the EP draw inspiration from Mickey's childhood passion for television. Much like her discovery of new artists through shows like 'Dawson's Creek' and 'Gilmore Girls,' MRCH has become a regular presence on soundtracks in the streaming age. Their songs have been featured in popular series such as 'Shameless,' 'Guilt,' 'The Vampire Diaries,' 'Famous in Love,' 'Search Party,' '13 Reasons Why,' and 'The Twilight Zone.'
Mickey explains that 'TV Bliss' is a nostalgic journey, akin to documentary déjà vu. Growing up in Bagdad, Arizona, a small copper mining town with a population never exceeding three thousand, she found solace in daytime reruns and '90s made-for-TV movies. These served as an escape into a world that may not have been better, but was beautifully imperfect, akin to cinematic experiences. When she began writing music, it naturally mirrored these aesthetics—grainy, unpolished, yet vivid and romantic. In recent years, especially amid the pandemic and her parents' consecutive health scares, Mickey found herself revisiting that sense of escapism, stepping back through the silver screen.
MRCH draws influence from the likes of Cocteau Twins, New Order, Metric, Phantogram, St. Vincent, Purity Ring, and Beach House. Up until now, they have operated as an independent band, fueled by their entrepreneurial spirit. It was this very spirit that led them to be discovered by The Vertex when Mickey reached out to the label's co-founder, Stephen Taverner, in the hopes of securing a support slot for Wolf Alice, whom he manages. As this new deal begins to open doors to fresh opportunities, MRCH's music propels forward into uncharted territory, showcasing a heightened level of accomplishment, intensity, and emotional engagement.
In summary, MRCH, the alternative duo hailing from Phoenix, is embarking on a new chapter with their latest single, "Stars Align." This track offers a glimpse into their forthcoming EP, 'TV Bliss,' marking their debut under a new deal with The Vertex. With their distinctive blend of driving alt-rock and sleek synth-pop, MRCH captivates listeners through Mickey Pangburn's exceptional vocals. Accompanied by a visually intriguing official music video, the duo's music resonates with both nostalgia and a contemporary edge. As they explore themes inspired by television and collaborate on a deeper level, MRCH's music is poised to make a significant impact as they navigate uncharted musical territory.
