With their creative prowess honed over three decades, The Coral reveals a new addition to their forthcoming album, Sea Of Mirrors. Titled 'That's Where She Belongs,' the song serves as a harmony-rich anthem to ultimate freedom, inspired by the breathtaking views of wheeling seabirds against the blue skies of their coastal hometown. Set within the conceptual framework of Sea Of Mirrors—an Italian spaghetti western filmed amidst unexpected Mediterranean storms—the track beautifully juxtaposes themes of release and redemption amidst a world of truth and fiction.
James Skelly, reflecting on the song, shares, "This was me chasing sunlit shadows, trying to capture the beauty of the summer. For some strange reason, I feel a duty to do that from time to time. It didn't work first time around, but we took it into the studio and used some old tricks we've learned – editing the violins into the chorus, turning almost everything backwards, and adding some Glenn Campbell guitars – and we came out with the hazy summer psychedelia the album needed to break up the intensity."
The Coral recently announced Sea Of Mirrors as their 11th studio album, building upon the success of their ambitious double-album concept, Coral Island, which reached No.2 on the charts in 2021. With Sea Of Mirrors as an imagined film soundtrack that was never made, the band embraces complete artistic freedom as they enter their third decade together. In a bold move, they will release their second album, Holy Joe's Coral Island Medicine Show, on the same day, September 8, 2023, defying conventions and expectations.
Both albums will be available in various formats, including limited-edition and standard vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital versions. Additionally, fans and collectors will have the opportunity to acquire exclusive physical copies of Holy Joe's Coral Island Medicine Show on single-pressing vinyl, CD, and cassette formats.
Noteworthy collaborations enrich the albums, with The High Llamas and Stereolab's Sean O'Hagan contributing as co-producer and arranger. Earlier releases featured actor John Simm from Dr Who and Life On Mars in 'Drifter's Prayer' from Holy Joe's Coral Island Medicine Show, and 'Ocean's Apart' featuring Cillian Murphy from Sea Of Mirrors. Furthermore, guitarist Johnny Echols of influential 60s psych legends Love lent his voice to the sleeve notes for Sea Of Mirrors in an exclusive Rough Trade flexi-disc, while James and Ian Skelly's grandfather, known as The Great Muriarty, reprises his role as the master of ceremonies for Coral Island on Holy Joe's Coral Island Medicine Show.
