Madonna Faces Trial in Russia for Promoting Gay Rights
- in Latest
Madonna has never been shy of causing controversy but this time she may have gone one step too far.
A Russian court has agreed that there is enough evidence to sue Madonna for promoting gay rights which she did frequently during her MDNA tour.
The singer reportedly riled up some of the locals by handing out pink anti-homophobia wristbands to crowds and telling people to “fight for the right to be free”. This was in response to a new regulation in St Petersburg banning the city’s gay pride parade as it promoted “gay lifestyles” and the “propagation of homosexuality” which have been outlawed.
Now Madonna is facing a £6.5 million lawsuit which was submitted by members of the Union of Russian Citizens who claim that her actions have caused “psychological stress and emotional shock”.
Handing out the wristbands wasn’t the only controversial thing Madonna did during her tour. She also expressed her support for the jailed members of Russian band Pussy Riot who were imprisoned for “hooliganism”. She performed a speech to the crowd of 20,000 people saying: “I think they have paid the price for this act and I pray for their freedom.”
Madonna herself did not attend a hearing and is not expected to attend future court dates.
