A DJ has decided to take on the monumental task of remixing every song that has ever reached number one in the UK.

The Official UK Singles Chart has recently celebrated its sixtieth year and so the hopefully not too aptly named DJ S**tmat is marking the occasion with the project.

Working under the name Mash Hits, he is attempting to use samples from over 1200 tracks to create new mixes.

His creations include a song called How do you Solve a Problem Like David where he takes samples from songs by David Bowie, David Essex and Fame Academy winner David Sneddon.

When asked about the project DJ S**tmat wrote: "For the past 10 months I have been reworking and re-imagining every UK number one single since the charts began in 1952. Using solely the 1200+ songs with no other samples I have created a huge portfolio of plunder-phonic works, varying dramatically from the absurd to the sublime, from hilarious to profound, recycling the songs that defined the generations with infinite imagination.

"The project is evolving and exciting as new works are uploaded daily online for the world to hear and download. One day you may hear Bucks Fizz turned into ambient mood music, the next 100 number ones are chopped up into fragments and made into a frenzied sound collage and by Friday it's Rage Against The Machine vs The Proclaimers vs Vengaboys."

The main aim of the project is to span the full range of the Official Charts and this is evident in his mash up between Winifred Atwell’s Poor People Of Paris which is from the 1950s and Psy’s recent hit Gangnam Style.
