As a testament to the creativity and resiliency of humanity, many great things were born during the pandemic beginning in 2020. As a way to formalize his explorations into making music to elicit feelings of peace and introspection in listeners, Jacob Rudin, (NTHNL), had the idea to create an album of calming, poetic, healing music using electronic binaural frequencies with performances on a variety of instruments.
In 2021 as Rudin was finishing his album “Cosmic Flute Rides Again” when he was approached by Leslie Graves, a yoga teacher and musician he frequently collaborated with, to see about making an album to accompany a yoga class in its entirety.
They began the project with focus on the chakras and worked with musical vibrations going from the bottom of the body to the top, meeting for a few sessions in which they sketched ideas on the piano with Leslie prompting the musical ideas through certain body-related keywords and Jacob responding in sound. Originally, this album “Music of the Body” (the original title), was conceived as a meditation on and through the body. Over the course of the next year, as Jacob spent more time with the material, he realized that the album’s progression through the body should exist in time as much as in space.
The music Rudin ended up creating became the newly released album, “Ontogenesis,” which employs a technique called brainwave entrainment, which uses certain frequencies to sympathetically vibrate the mind, inducing it easily into meditative states.
In the process, Rudin came upon the word “Ontogenesis” in Erwin Schrodinger’s “What is life?” This was a book written before the discovery of DNA which attempts to find the physical basis for life existing and reproducing itself. Through this exploration, Jacob discovered many deep and beautiful ideas which he incorporated into the music. “Ontogenesis” means “the progression of an organism from conception through death.
Jacob says, “As we move up the body, we move through a life, from before the beginning to after the end, reflecting and accepting at every stage in order to move on and through.”
Each of the tracks on the album “Ontogenesis” has a corresponding visualization meditation one can do while listening. One can return their focus to the music or to the given meditation or can use them in tandem to amplify the experience of each to the other.
