WRENNI’s latest album, “How to Hate Me,” is a powerful exploration of resilience and self-empowerment. As an Indigenous queer artist, WRENNI draws from a well of personal experiences marked by generational trauma, discrimination, and significant adversity. Her journey has not been easy—strained relationships, the dismantling of her nonprofit organization, and her ex-husband’s stroke have all contributed to a challenging narrative.
In “How to Hate Me,” WRENNI confronts her haters with unapologetic honesty. She describes her writing process as an outpouring of emotions, reflecting on the negativity she’s encountered, including the tumultuous relationship with her birth mother. Each track on the album serves as a testament to her strength, weaving together elements of satire, emotional depth, and infectious pop hooks.
The standout single, “Multidimensional Dumpster Phoenix,” encapsulates the album's theme. With its catchy melody and poignant lyrics, the song reflects WRENNI’s refusal to be defined by her struggles. Instead, she reclaims her narrative, turning hurt into art and hostility into resilience.
WRENNI’s previous works, including “One More Fantasy,” “Burn Your Life Down,” and “Shieldmaiden,” released under her former stage name Helfreya, showcase her evolution as an artist. She has consistently pushed boundaries and explored complex themes through her music. Her live performances are equally compelling; she has taken the stage at various notable events such as the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, Winnipeg Jazz Festival, Recovery Day, Whoop and Hollar Folk Fest, and Winnipeg Pride Festival. Her ability to connect with audiences makes her a standout performer in the indie pop scene.
