Gotye’s track Somebody That I Used to Know has been named the UK’s biggest selling single of 2012 so far by the Official Charts Company.

The song has sold 1.28 million copies so far since its initial release way back in February of this year and has remained in the Official Top 100 ever since, currently placing at number 83.

Number two on the list was Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call me Maybe which is another song which has refused to drop out of the charts this year. After Jepsen was FUN’s We are Young.

In addition to being the biggest selling song of this year, Somebody That I Used to Know has also become one of only 123 songs to have sold over a million copies since the charts started 60 years ago.

The Official Charts Company has commented to say that there is no guarantee that the top five songs will remain as they are by the end of the year however as December is traditionally the biggest months for record sales. There are still a number of big tracks that are going to be released this month to contend for the Christmas number one including the single of the X Factor winner and a tribute to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster featuring Paul McCartney.
