Amy Shark, one of Australia's most successful artists and an eight-time ARIA Award winner, has treated fans today with the release of her latest single, "My Only Friend," featuring Tom DeLonge from Blink-182. The track is taken from her highly anticipated third studio album, Sunday Sadness, set for release in August.
"My Only Friend" is a poignant and tender piece that showcases Shark's exceptional vocal and lyrical abilities, complemented by DeLonge's distinctive voice. The song weaves a beautiful narrative about friendship, offering fans another glimpse into Sunday Sadness. This upcoming album also includes the Gold-accredited single "Can I Shower At Yours," "Beautiful Eyes," "Loving Me Lover," and the fan-favorite "Two Friends."
Sunday Sadness is Amy Shark's first album in three years, following her ARIA #1 albums Cry Forever in 2021 and Love Monster in 2018. The release of "My Only Friend" completes Shark's collaboration with all three members of Blink-182, having previously worked with Mark Hoppus on "Psycho" in 2018 and Travis Barker on "C’mon" in 2020.
Described as an 11-track masterpiece, Sunday Sadness features the creative input of a dream lineup of producers, including Kid Harpoon, Joel Little, Dann Hume, Jon Hume, Sam de Jong, and Matt Corby. The album promises to cement Shark's status in Australian music royalty with its heartbreakingly personal lyricism, delicate harmonies, and confronting emotional warmth.
The song is about those moments in life when you're in a situation with someone you love, whether a party, a dinner, a wedding - and you feel for them, you're worried about them, and they seem alone in the corner while you know everyone. It's isolating for them but your love and care for them is stronger than the moment and the people around you. Sometimes you feel they just need to hear the words, don't worry, I got you, you're my only friend."
Speaking on the upcoming release, Amy shares: "I specifically wrote this album on Sundays, constantly daydreaming about the happiest moments and the worst, remembering the best people while still getting over others. I am different on Sundays, I am not sure why, but I bet you are too.”
Shark continues: “I think about my life so much on Sundays, my family, my friends and probably you. I’m still learning people, I’m still trying to be a better person, Sunday Sadness has every emotion I feel, you'll smile in some songs and feel the love - but you'll also be sad and probably not sleep well this Sunday night."
The past couple of years have been monumental for Shark, who returned to Australian television screens earlier this year as a judge on the highly anticipated return season of Australian Idol. She also took home the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent at the 2023 Logie Awards, joining the ranks of Australians who have received both an ARIA Award and a Logie Award.
Sunday Sadness is poised to affirm Amy Shark's place on the global stage, showcasing why she is a beloved figure in the music industry. Fans eagerly await the full album, which promises to deliver a deeply personal and emotionally resonant listening experience.
