Celebrated for his storytelling prowess, Chase Rice has unveiled his latest emotionally charged single, "Haw River," giving fans a taste of his forthcoming independent album Go Down Singin', set for release on September 20. Billboard has praised Rice for his ability to create vivid portraits with his lyrics, and "Haw River" further solidifies his reputation as a master of gripping narratives. The haunting ballad blends Rice’s raw storytelling with a chilling tale of power, retribution, and tragedy, offering a dark yet poignant glimpse into the themes that permeate his new project.
Inspired by a writing retreat in Wilmington, North Carolina, where Rice encountered a woman named Kayla from Haw River, the song takes on a haunting narrative. With the help of his writing partner Blake Pendergrass, Rice turned the chance meeting into a murder ballad. “We met a girl who said, ‘I’m Kayla from Haw River,’ and my ears just went up,” Rice recalls. “Blake said, ‘We should make that a murder ballad…’ and we were off. Between the series 1923 about those priests beating up and raping Native American girls and our imaginations, it got pretty dark.”
Haw River tells the story of a preacher who abuses his power, only to face chilling retribution at the hands of one of his victims. With vivid lyrics and a stirring melody, the song showcases Rice’s evolution as an artist and his deep connection to themes of growth, loss, and redemption. The track joins a collection of introspective songs on Go Down Singin', marking a significant moment in Rice’s career as he takes full creative control with this independent release.
Rice describes his forthcoming album as the most honest work he’s ever created. “Go Down Singin' is about where I am right now,” Rice shares. “It’s about taking everything I’ve been through, all the mistakes and the lessons learned, and turning them into something meaningful. This album is the most honest I’ve ever been, and I can’t wait for people to hear it.”
The new album was produced by Oscar Charles and features a collection of songs that explore Rice’s reflections on life, relationships, and the hardships he’s faced. Fans can look forward to tracks like “Fireside,” “Hey God It’s Me Again,” and the duet “That Word Don’t Work No More,” featuring the revered songwriter Lori McKenna. The album promises to be a powerful follow-up to Rice’s critically acclaimed I Hate Cowboys & All Dogs Go To Hell, further exploring his evolution as an artist.
Chase Rice’s gritty, gravelly voice continues to captivate audiences, and with more than 2.6 million albums sold and over 2.8 billion total streams, he has solidified his place in country music. Known for his high-energy live performances, Rice has been selling out venues across the globe, including headlining his own Get Western Tour. He is currently serving as direct support on Dierks Bentley’s Gravel & Gold Tour.
With Go Down Singin', Rice is ready to take his music to a new level, offering fans a deeply personal and unfiltered look at his life and experiences.
