On sunday night, James Arthur was announced as the winner of the X Factor in front of a crowd of 10,000 in Manchester.

Runner up Jahmene Douglas was gracious in his defeat, saying that it was "a blessing to share the stage with such a talent".

James was just a humble in winning, being lost for words at first before finally saying to host Dermot O’Leary: "I don’t know what to think, just thank you so much. Have I really won? Wow, I don’t know what to say.”

The final turned out to be one of the biggest in the show’s nine year history with most of the contestants returning for a final group performance and global superstars Kylie Minogue, Rihanna and Emeli Sande also performing.

The rollercoaster ride is only beginning for James as well with his first single, a cover of Shontelle’s Impossible being released on iTunes immediately after the show.

It went straight to number one in the iTunes chart, where it currently remains so it looks as though the 24 year old will most likely be celebrating his first number one on Sunday.

The song quickly overtook Will.I.Am and Britney Spears’ collaboration Scream and Shout, a fact that well and truly dispels any doubts there may still be about James’ popularity.

100% of the profits from the sales of Impossible are going to help the charity Together for Short Lives.
