You're The One That I Want All Time Greatest Musical Comebacks

in Latest

To celebrate the Christmas reunion of Grease stars John Travolta and Olivia Newton, here are the greatest comeback hits of all time.

Kylie Minogue - Spinning Around

Kylie Minogue, or just Kylie to her friends, first achieved public recognition for her part in the popular Australian soap Neighbours, before making a seamless transition to the world of music. Yet, while the Melbourne native hit the number one spot with her first single, The Loco-Motion, by the late 90s Kyle was in relative obscurity. However, the Aussie was back with a bang and returned to fame with her hit song Spinning Around. The release went straight to the top of the charts, making the former soap star only the second female solo artist, after Madonna, to have UK number one singles in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.

Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name of

In 2009, off the back of a social network campaign, Rage Against the Machine pulled of one of the biggest surprises in musical history by beating X Factor winner Joe McElderry to the Christmas number one number from, outselling the young singer on downloads. As well as giving the rock group the much coveted festive top spot, the song was the impetus for the band to get back in the studio and lay down some new material. Despite this, it does seem ironic that it was the use of machines that helped to get the notoriously anti-establishment band to number one. Although, on the other hand, perhaps it isn’t ironic, as the band did beat one of Simon Cowell’s X protégés to get there.

Cher - Believe

During her time in the spotlight, the Armenian-American Cher was one of the biggest female performers of her time. The singer first made it big in 1965 as part of the husband and wife duo Sonny & Cher. Following the band’s success, Cher went on to enjoy a roaring solo career. Despite this, by the time the 90s rolled in, Cher was little more than a footnote in a new world of flashy pop music. However, Cher turned back the clocks with her huge comeback single Believe, which reached number one in 23 countries and became one of the best selling hits of all time. The innovative use of auto tune on the song even led to the distinctive sound being called the Cher Effect, although Kanye West seems to be trying hard to change this.

Take That - Patience

During the 90s, British boy band Take That were one of the biggest acts in the UK. Having made their way up through the musical ranks, the band made their first television hit on Hitman and Her in 1990 and hit number one in the charts in 1993 with Everything Changes, the first of fouor consecutive hits to reach the top spot. However, the departure of bandmate Robbie Williams 1995 spelt the beginning of the end for the group, who broke up in 1996. However, 10 years later, the band reformed, although still without Williams, the group rediscovered their old magic and returned to number one with their comeback single Patience.

Now Travolta & Newton-John are back with their album ‘This Christmas’. Reviews have been mixed, as I’m sure is the reaction to the fact they even got back in the studio. Whatever your opinion, it’s probably worth selling a couple of your old cds and dvds online at musicMagpie and downloading it on iTunes listen so you can join in the debate this Christmas.Like it or not, I’m sure their Christmas single ‘I Think You Might Like It’ will be reaching your ears soon.
