Today, global cultural icons Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre released the explosive new Missionary short film, arriving alongside Snoop Dogg’s highly anticipated studio album Missionary. Produced by Dr. Dre and released via Death Row Records, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope, the album is available to stream everywhere starting today.
The album features the track Last Dance With Mary Jane (ft. Tom Petty and Jelly Roll), sampling Tom Petty’s Mary Jane’s Last Dance. Petty, who was connected to Dre through Interscope founder Jimmy Iovine, seemed to anticipate the collaboration. “I have this video clip with Tom Petty saying, ‘If Dre ever samples the song Mary Jane’s Last Dance, he’s going to have an instant hit on his hands,’” Dre told the Los Angeles Times. “It comes along with a massive amount of trust. And you know, Snoop’s putting his entire career and his legacy and everything that he’s built in my hands. So I have to really nurture that and make sure it’s presented in the right way.”
Missionary notably marks the first collaborative effort from the iconic duo since Snoop’s 1993 classic debut album Doggystyle. The album is more than a collection of songs—it’s a cultural moment that cements the legacy Snoop and Dre have built across decades while ushering in a new era for one of hip-hop’s most important musical partnerships.
“This is the next chapter in our story,” Snoop says. “We [still] in love with what we do. I’m peaking right now and Dr. Dre see that. He brings the best out of me because he’s particular about everything I say, the way I deliver it, the fuckin’ music, and the concept of the songs.”
The Missionary short film accompanies the album and is available to watch now. The visual experience adds another dimension to the project, which blends Dre’s unparalleled production with Snoop’s unmistakable artistry.
