Cheryl Cole and Carly Rae Jepsen Reach a Million Single Sales
- in Latest
The Official Charts Company has announced that Cheryl Cole and Carly Rae Jepsen have both become members of the “million seller’s club” by exceeding sales of a million with their songs “Fight for this Love” and “Call me Maybe” respectively.
Cheryl’s hit from 2009 and Jepsen’s summer smash hit have become the second and third songs to achieve the milestone this year, the first being Gotye and Kimbra’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” which hit the figure earlier this year.
To put the landmark into perspective, only 125 songs have made it to a million copies sold in the UK since the charts were launched in 1952.
The rise of download has increased sales in recent years however, which is evident in the fact that 76 of those were released in the last 10 years.
Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company said: "Many congratulations are due to Carly Rae Jepsen and Cheryl Cole, who have joined Gotye to make it three million sellers this year.
"The fact that there has still only been 125 million sellers over the last 60 years indicates just quite how impressive a landmark it is to reach."
Even though we are only three years into this decade, it looks as though it could break the records that were previously held by the 70s and 90s for producing million selling songs. The 70s first held the record with 27, then the 90s with 32 but there have already been 12 additions in the 2010s so we are well on the way to smashing the record.
