“Gangnam Style” Set to be Entered into the Dictionary
- in Latest
If you thought it was just a craze that would go away with time then you could be wrong as “Gangnam Style” could be entered into the Collins British Dictionary this year.
Every year, Collins choose 12 words to be entered into the Dictionary from over 7,000 submissions to their online database. The lucky additions are chosen based on how often are spoken and if they are likely to stick around in conversation.
Although it hasn't been officially announced that “Gangnam Style” will be added to the Dictionary as yet, Ian Brookes who is the Dictionary’s consultant editor is very optimistic saying: "It's obviously a craze, so there's the possibility it will go away. But it's been heard by so many people that I think it's probably earned the right to go into the dictionary.
"We were looking for words that told the story of the year. Some words are from events that have been and gone and so are not likely to stick around ... but others are probably here to stay."
A few of the other words that are under consideration for this year are “fiscal cliff”', “Romneyshambles” and “mummy porn”, which is a term that came about as a result of the success of 50 Shades of Grey.
“Gangnam Style’s” chances of making it into the dictionary have increased since the video recently hit a billion views on YouTube. It is the first song ever to do so and has long passed the video that previously held the title for the most views which was “Baby” by Justin Bieber.
