Music legends Elton John and Brandi Carlile have unveiled their latest single, Swing For The Fences, a euphoric rock anthem that serves as the newest glimpse into their highly anticipated collaborative album, Who Believes In Angels?, set for release on April 4 via Interscope Records.
The track, described as both uplifting and defiant, carries a powerful message of resilience and self-belief. Speaking about the song’s inspiration, Carlile shared, “Swing For The Fences was a little gem I took into the studio with me: I’m a gay woman, Elton’s a gay man, and we both have families, and our dreams have come true. I was thinking, wouldn’t it be cool to write an anthem for young gay kids out there that calls them into a bigger, more elegant, more fabulous life. Just like ‘go, go! don’t let anything hold you back!’”
Elton John echoed the sentiment, explaining that recording Swing For The Fences was a pivotal moment in shaping the direction of the album. “It was the moment that crystallized where the album was going. It was hard to get to that point, but we knew we had to rise to the occasion. We all just felt this massive sense of joy and euphoria,” he said.
The concept for Who Believes In Angels? was born out of a deep musical connection between John and Carlile, alongside GRAMMY-winning producer Andrew Watt. Unlike many collaborative albums, this project was crafted from scratch in just 20 days at Los Angeles’ Sunset Sound Studios, with no pre-written material. The duo was supported by a powerhouse band, including Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Pino Palladino (Nine Inch Nails, David Gilmour), and Josh Klinghoffer (Pearl Jam, Beck).
A short film documenting the album’s creation offers an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at the creative process. Static cameras captured thousands of hours of raw footage, revealing the emotional highs and lows of writing and recording—“breakdowns, breakthroughs, tears, and torn-up lyric sheets”—providing fans with an intimate glimpse into the journey.
Who Believes In Angels? promises to be an eclectic mix of genres, blending rock, pop, country-tinged Americana, and synth-heavy psychedelia. The album follows the release of its widely acclaimed title track and features Never Too Late, the 2025 Oscar-nominated song written for the Disney+ documentary of the same name.
Fans eager to see the duo perform live will have the chance at An Evening With Elton John & Brandi Carlile, a one-night-only event at The London Palladium on March 26, 2025. The sold-out show will combine storytelling and performance, offering a rare opportunity to witness the magic of their collaboration on stage.
With Who Believes In Angels?, Elton John and Brandi Carlile have created an album that is as unexpected as it is triumphant, marking a bold new chapter in both artists’ legendary careers.
