The legendary Irish band, The Corrs, took to the stage at the Royal Albert Hall for a special performance in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust, marking a nostalgic and heartfelt return to the iconic venue that played a pivotal role in their career trajectory.
As part of this year’s Teenage Cancer Trust concert series running from March 24-30, The Corrs joined an esteemed lineup that includes The Who, James Arthur, a comedy night hosted by Micky Flanagan, and an Erased Tapes showcase featuring Penguin Cafe. The concert series aims to raise vital funds to support young people battling cancer across the UK.
From the moment the first drumbeats echoed through the packed venue, the excitement was electric. The Corrs opened with the hauntingly beautiful ‘Only When I Sleep,’ followed by ‘Give Me A Reason,’ instantly captivating the audience.
Lead singer Andrea Corr reflected on the band's deep connection to the Royal Albert Hall, recalling how a career-defining performance at the venue, broadcast by the BBC on St. Patrick’s Day, helped them break through industry barriers. “This place is very dear to our hearts,” she told the audience. “Our music was being put in the folk section of record stores because they didn’t know where to place us. But that all changed here, and it’s really special to be back.”
Acknowledging the importance of the cause, Andrea emphasized the vital work of Teenage Cancer Trust. “This charity does incredible things, supporting teenagers who are even more vulnerable than teenagers already are. Let’s blow the roof off tonight.”
The setlist was a perfect balance of their biggest hits and deep cuts, highlighting their signature fusion of traditional Irish sounds with pop-rock melodies. Caroline Corr’s violin shone on the haunting ‘Lough Erin Shore,’ while ‘What Can I Do’ brought a surge of nostalgia, drawing cheers from the crowd. The energy soared as ‘Joy of Life’ and ‘Ellis Island’ showcased the band’s musical versatility, with ‘Dreams,’ ‘I Never Loved You Anyway,’ ‘So Young,’ and ‘Runaway’ keeping the audience on their feet.
The encore was nothing short of exhilarating, as ‘Breathless’ had the entire Royal Albert Hall singing along, culminating in the grand finale with the lively Irish reel, ‘Toss the Feathers.’
Special guests Dea Matrona, the Belfast-born duo of Mollie McGinn and Orlaith Forsythe, delivered an outstanding opening set, their harmonies and musicianship shining on tracks like ‘Glory Glory.’
Kate Collins, Chief Executive of Teenage Cancer Trust, expressed her gratitude for the unwavering support from artists and the entertainment industry. “These concerts, the brainchild of Roger Daltrey, have raised an incredible £34 million to fund specialist support for young people with cancer. The support from artists, managers, agents, and fans alike makes a world of difference.”
Jamie Johnson, Head of Music and Entertainment at Teenage Cancer Trust, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the concerts’ role in funding specialist care. “The need has never been greater, and the music industry’s continued support is vital to ensuring we can keep making an impact.”
Supported by sponsors such as Aldi and Domino’s, the Teenage Cancer Trust concerts remain a cornerstone of charitable efforts within the music industry, combining world-class performances with a profound mission to support young people fighting cancer.
With The Corrs' triumphant return and a stellar lineup still to come, the Royal Albert Hall once again proves to be a beacon of music, nostalgia, and hope.
