Amy Macdonald Is Done Playing the Game—Her Bold New Album Is Here to Prove It

Amy Macdonald has never needed to shout to be heard. Across five acclaimed albums, she’s made a name for herself by crafting deeply human songs that balance resilience with raw emotion. Now, after more than a decade in the game—and over a billion streams to her name—she’s gearing up to release her sixth studio album, Is This What You’ve Been Waiting For?, out July 11th via Infectious Music.

A lot has changed since her breakout with This Is The Life, but Macdonald’s approach hasn’t. She still writes from experience, whether her own or borrowed from the world around her. Her new record digs into themes of toxic friendships, the weight of social pressure, and finding the nerve to walk away.

“I feel very lucky to be in the place I am now,” Amy says. “I’ve got this career, good friends, my family, and people still seem to want to hear my music, which is great. There’s a realness in me, something raw – honestly I’m winging it most of the time.”

That sense of unfiltered honesty pulses through the record’s title track, which opens with a pounding beat and explodes into a euphoric anthem—one clearly built for the stage. It captures the collective high of a live crowd and the electricity of a gig where everything just clicks. For Amy, it’s that feeling that matters most.

“This song was actually inspired by when they opened The Sphere in Las Vegas – I woke up one day and saw all of these videos of it, and I thought, this is incredible! I was totally blown away by it, and it reminded me of how gigs are experiences. It really inspired me and made me think about how music is for me, and gigs have always been the most important part.”

But the track also serves as a not-so-subtle response to the digital hamster wheel that’s taken over music in the streaming age.

“Streaming has created the demand for new music all of the time – it’s like a constant treadmill,” she adds. “This song is my view on how people always expect more music and social media content.”

A Record That Moves—and Moves You

Is This What You’ve Been Waiting For? blends emotional depth with an urgent sense of forward motion. There’s defiance and release, sure—but also connection and care. It’s a reflection of where Amy is now: confident in her craft, rooted in gratitude, and still playing to sold-out crowds.

The album was produced by Nicolas Rebscher (AURORA, Louis Tomlinson) and Grammy-winning producer Jim Abbiss (Adele, Arctic Monkeys), giving it both emotional punch and sonic polish.

Macdonald will take the album out on the road later this year with an expansive UK and European tour that includes a massive homecoming at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro—a reminder that her connection with fans has only grown stronger over the years.

Fans who pre-order the album will get exclusive pre-sale access to tour tickets starting April 28th. The general sale opens April 30th.
