Snoop Dogg drops misogynistic lyrics
Snoop Dogg has revealed in a recent interview that he has no regrets over the lyrics in some of his older songs which have been accused repeatedly of being misogynistic.
The rapper said: "Definitely, my attitude has changed towards women. I am more sensitive and more vulnerable writing-wise and accepting a woman for being a beautiful person, as opposed to me saying she is a b***h or a w***e because that was how I was trained when I first started, so I have no regrets.
"As I grew I fell in love with my wife and started to love my mother, my grandmother and my daughter. I understood what a woman was and I started to write about and express that.
"Once I figured out there was room to grow and learn and to be a better person, then I incorporated that in everything I was doing. I don't feel like you can be ashamed or mad about not knowing - if you don't know, you don't know."
Far from his claim of no regrets being misogynistic as it first seems, his reasoning actually paints the picture of someone who has been on a personal journey and has now redeemed themselves.
The rap industry has a bad reputation for the way it treats women and Snoop Dogg has long been one of the faces of this reputation. The fact that he has now spoken out and expressed the notion that he was wrong to portray women in a certain way makes him a positive influence on young rap fans.
Whether he chooses to express this view in any new material he produces is another matter entirely.
There is another reason for his sudden change of heart beyond him seeing the error of his own ways. It used to be almost socially acceptable to portray women as the bikini-clad empty-headed arm candy of old but times have changed and both women and men are unwilling to accept this portrayal any longer.
By subscribing to these less dated ideas of femininity, Snoop Dogg is protecting his future in the music industry.
