Disney’s Mickey Mouse Battle over Deadmau5 logo resolved
You have to be pretty stupid or very brave to go up against entertainment giant Disney in a legal battle but that's exactly what DJ Deadmau5 did and it appears as though he has emerged from the dispute relatively unscathed.
Disney took issue with the Deadmau5 mouse head symbol which they believe is far too close to the company's Mickey Mouse mascot design. They are famously protective of their mouse so it came as little surprise when they sprang into action to try and shut Deadmau5 down.
Disney's argument was that the logo was "nearly identical in appearance, connotation and overall commercial impression to Disney's Mouse Ears Marks" and would "cause confusion" among consumers.
Disney seem very mercenary in their approach, making sure there can be no confusion to blemish their good name. In fact their whole approach to this and similar issues shows them to be ruthless in their pursuit to protect the Disney name which is quickly becoming synonymous with a disdain for the “little guy”.
Admittedly, the similarities between the two logos are remarkable but arguably, they are far too different for anyone to mistake the two although it could be argued that it could make it look as though they are working together. In fact, this is confusingly true as Disney have previously asked Deadmau5 to work on a re-imagining of Fantasia although this cold be a clever way to keep the DJ in their pocket and to make sure that he stays in line with the Disney ethos.
No details have yet been released regarding the deal that the two parties have struck although the resolution has been described as “amicable”. One thing's certain: Deadmau5 had better watch his back. You wouldn't like Mickey Mouse when he's angry.
Do you think they are similar? What are your thoughts? Please comment below:
