- by Diane Scorpion
The Rolling Stones embark on their “No Filter” tour next month and have announced a different support act for each venue.
The first gig is at Croke Park in Dublin, and the Stones, wanting an Irish band as their opening act, have chosen The Academic. The group is initially from Mullingar and is made up of Craig Fitzgerald, Dean Gavin and brothers Matt and Stephen Murtagh.
The Academic are thrilled to have been chosen, with it being the most significant performance of their career so far. Currently in the middle of a sold-out tour, the band have said: “We have been lucky to support some of the most influential bands before like The Strokes, but this is on another level. We’re more excited than nervous, but nerves will probably kick in on the day.”
Other confirmed support acts include Liam Gallagher, Florence + The Machine, The Specials, Elbow and The Vaccines.
Liam Gallagher will be playing a London Stadium date and has said: “It’s a dream come true to be asked to open for the mighty Rolling Stones – the best rock ‘n’ roll band ever.”
Florence + The Machine will open for the Stones at the same venue and have tweeted: “We are so excited to be supporting the Rolling Stones. It is a huge honour to be playing with one of our biggest influences.”
Also included on the tour is James Bay performing at Twickenham Stadium and Richard Ashcroft has two dates, one at Old Trafford and one at Murrayfield Stadium.
James Bay has said: “Is this for real? It’s an absolute honour to announce I’m supporting the Rolling Stones.”
The “No Filter” tour starts on May 17 in Dublin and ends on June 19 at Twickenham.
