Lewis Capaldi: uploading songs from his bedroom, to chart topping vocal sensation

by Frederika B

Lewis Capaldi is a 22-year-old singer from Glasgow. His modest attitude, great songs and unique voice have catapulted him into the limelight in what seems like overnight.

Capaldi is not your average Scottish name, as he has Italian ancestry hence the name. He is an up-and-coming star and is making waves. He was nominated for the BRITS Critics Choice Award in 2018 and also supported Niall Horan and Sam Smith on their tours as well as Rag’n’bone Man and other famous artists.

A true product of his own talent, Capaldi gained recognition from uploading home recordings from his bedroom. Manager Ryan Walter noticed him in 2017, where he released his first song "Bruises". This track amassed 28 million streams on Spotify, making him the first ever unsigned artist to achieve such feat. In 2018 Vevo named him as a discovery artist to look out for. Not long after that, he was signed with VIRGIN EMI Records and Capitol Records. His genre of music is Folk, Rock and Pop.

Now enjoying immense chart success with singles like ‘Someone you Loved’ peaking at position number one for seven weeks, this seems Incredible considering he was an unsigned musician not too long ago.

With Lewis Capaldi lately being a recognised household name, he has also become a benchmark for other artists to cover his songs too. From local pub singers to large signed names, it seems everyone is wanting a taste of his songs at the minute.

Aswell as a huge talent, he seems to be quite a character too. Not shy to poke fun at himself, in a recent interview he said he looks like a ‘melting hippo’ and ‘will be on Tinder until the day he dies’. He often dismisses comments about his recent success and that fact he is becoming one of Scotland's biggest names.

Currently touring, he couldn’t believe that it was sold out, even before his album came out “My UK and Ireland Arena Tour Sold out and I haven’t even got an Album out yet- cheers to everyone who got a ticket, tried to get one or wanted one but for whatever reason couldn’t , honestly it means so much- see you all there, I can’t believe this is happening.” Lewis is going to be a busy throughout 2019 and has up-and-coming tours booked and is amped to do them all.

It seems that the Capaldi family have creative genes and not just Lewis, as he is distant related to Peter Capaldi the infamous Doctor Who and physicist Joseph Capaldi who was praised for his work on the Higgs Boson International Project.
