Interview: Charlotte Jane talks new music, songwriting & surprise gift from Lewis Capaldi

by Andrew Braithwaite

Charlotte Jane is a name that you'll probably be hearing a lot more about in the near future. The young singer-songwriter, who’s originally from Hull has been quietly racking up millions of streams, whilst catching the attention of some major stars in the music business.

Charlotte has already performed at Reading and Leeds Festival with the likes of Jess Glynne, Dennis Lloyd, Tom Odell and Lewis Capaldi, and also hosted a bunch of her own sell-out headline shows. Capaldi has also shown great support and encouragement, plus gifting her with a trip to Colombia to record.

With her latest single ‘Get It Right’ now gaining traction, this bright new upcoming talent is tipped for greater things. I recently caught up with Charlotte to ask some further questions about her as an artist.

I believe you have recently shared your latest single ‘Get It Right’. What was the inspiration behind this song and video?

I wrote the song two years ago in LA with Dayyon Alexander and Jeff Shum. It sat in the notes app on my phone for those two years only getting played in my car. I actually wanted to put it on my first EP but it just didn’t fit. The day before I went into the studio and wrote it, I’d used up my last bit of patience on a guy who had been messing me around for a while. I knew exactly what he was like but still I spent months waiting for him to prove me wrong. Such a waste of time. Get it Right is the anthem for the lightbulb moment when you realise your own self worth and stop letting people string you along. Sonically and lyrically, the song has a real reflective feel. We played on that in quite an abstract way in the music video. Showing a detachment from who I am now and who I was by me becoming more and more out of sync with my reflection.

How would you describe your general songwriting process?

It really does differ depending on who I’m working with. Sometimes I think of the concept first, sometimes the melody. I’d say I nearly always write at least a rough idea of the melody before I write all of the lyrics though. I’m always inspired by my life and those around me and how I feel about it all.

With the obvious struggles throughout this year, how have you been passing your time?

Playing Fortnite, cooking enough for a family of 6 most nights when there’s only me and my boyfriend, going from being a sofa sloth for a few weeks to being a fitness freak then back to the sofa again and watching more TV series than I ever thought I would have time for. There was a smidge of songwriting in there somewhere as well.

I also believe that some high profile stars have given you some pretty decent feedback, along with a nice gesture from Lewis Capaldi. Can you tell us a little more about this?

Yeah I’ve had some really lovely support from people I look up to in the industry. Lewis won an award for Artist of The Year at the A&M awards in 2019 and along with his award he won an all expenses paid trip to Colombia to go and record at a studio out there. Unbeknown to me, him and his team figured he wouldn’t have time to redeem the prize so he awarded it to me instead. I was surprised with it on the night, I was completely shellshocked!

Who are your main influences?

Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Coldplay, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Bon Iver…. The list is so so long haha! But those are the headline ones! I listened to so much music growing up and still listen to a real variety of artists now. I’m sure everything I listen to has influenced me in some way.

Have you got a standout gig or performance?

I think my headline shows in 2019 were standouts for me, especially the Hull ones. It was just so cool to have a room full of people who knew my songs and were there to see me!

Do you have a dream artist collaboration that you would like to team up with?

I would love to work with H.E.R. I think she’s a once in a generation type of artist, being in the studio with her would be so cool.

What was the biggest turning point in your music career so far?

Even after signing my publishing deal and record deal, I still think the biggest turning point was meeting my manager in 2015. That was so huge for me and completely transformed everything.

Have you got any gigs planned for 2021, what are your general plans?

I have a couple of shows with Rag ’n’ Boneman in summer that were rescheduled from 2020. Obviously, despite it being a new year, we’re still in quite a similar situation in terms of the pandemic and we don’t yet know how quickly the vaccine will be rolled out. So as much as I’m hoping, with every fibre of my being, that summer shows will go ahead, I can’t bring myself to get my hopes up too much.

Have you got a message for your followers and fans?

I guess just hang on in there everyone, brighter days are coming (literally the sun is only going to shine for longer and longer from now until summer) and I can’t wait to sing with you all again someday soon x x x

Thanks Charlotte - all the best for the future!
