Q&A: Tyler Booth talks inspirations & touring

by Andrew Braithwaite

Lauded for his devotion to country traditions, Tyler Booth took to the stage at the UK's C2C earlier this year. His next appearance will be at The Long Road Festival on August 26th, followed by his inaugural UK Headline tour, featuring performances in Manchester, London, and Glasgow. Booth's talent has also seen him share the spotlight with notable names like Darius Rucker, Jon Pardi, Brooks & Dunn, and Cody Johnson. Excitingly, he is slated to kick off Jake Owen's "Loose Cannon Tour" in the upcoming US autumn season. Through his relentless touring efforts, Booth has cultivated a dedicated fanbase, bolstered by his impressive following of over a million on social media.

Recently, we caught up with Tyler to find a little more about him as an artist.

Hey Tyler, thanks for chatting to us! You grew up in Kentucky, in a musical family - when did you first pick up a guitar and realise you had a talent for songwriting?

I can’t remember the first time I picked up a guitar.  It seems like I always just had one in my hands. I guess I was tuning guitars for the guys in my dads band at a really early age and started playing guitar when my fingers were strong enough to play one. I started writing songs at a very early age. I was a really shy kid and guess it was an outlet for me. I’ve written so many songs but when I wrote “Palomino Princess” that gave me some confidence to put more of my songs out there.

Was there a defining moment when you realised that music was your passion and you wanted to become an artist?

Not really, I’ve always known that I was going to play music for a living. Whether it was in bars or on the Opry Stage. It’s just what I’m going to do with my life, it’s my calling, what makes me happy. I have no materialistic wants in life, just to be happy.  It would be cool to be able to pay my band more, they work hard and I love them and their families. That’d be cool. I’m just a singer/songwriter that loves to perform. Let's see how far it goes. It's doing ok so far I guess.

We love your new single Different Kind of Blue - what was the inspiration behind the song?

Thank you so much!! I wrote that song when I felt down and out about a relationship I was in at the time. We’d had an argument and I just felt so bad about it. It was like a “Different Kind of Blue” that I had never felt before. It didn’t matter where or what I was doing I couldn’t shake it. The Song is really doing great and I’m glad people seem to be relating to it. So glad you like it too.

If you had to pick five albums that inspire your songwriting, what would they be?

Super hard question.

“Lonesome Song” album by Jamey Johnson

“Stardust” album Willie Nelson

“Dreaming My Dreams” Waylon Jennings

“Chris Knight” by Chris Knight

“Honky Tonk Heroes” Waylon Jennings

For someone who doesn’t know anything about your music - which of your tracks would you tell them to listen to?

Prolly “Palomino Princess” solo wrote that one.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?

This is a hard question because I really have no idea. I’ve been playing a lot of big music festivals in the US. Sometimes there’s like 30,000 people at those festivals. But, I’d prolly say this last Cody Johnson shows were because it was arenas every night. CoJo sells them shows out too and people get there early to see me and the boys. CoJo gives me a lot of hope because he’s more traditional like me and he’s selling out areas. He’s really a great guy too.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

It’s going to be harder than hell to do this, are you crazy? Haha. Nah, I’d say hey man “Palomino Princess” is a hell of a song to keep writing man. I prolly should have been sharing my songs sooner. I’ve got a lot of them. Telling ya, I feel like I got my best songs in the cooker right now. It’s going to be awesome to share them with y’all.

What’s your relationship like with social media - do you love or loathe it?

I have a big social media I guess. A lot of what they call followers on Tiktok. I love it, sort of got me through Covid. But, now that I’m touring, writing, and recording, it’s much harder to make time for it. I don’t consider myself a TikToker, It’s just part of it these days, you just about have to embrace it.

If you had to pick someone to play you in a movie of your life who would it be?

Prolly need to be someone that has a more of a baritone voice. I’m not sure really, not a lot of people sing like me. Haha. I can’t answer that question. We’ll hire a producer to get to work on that. Lol

You played C2C earlier this year and are back in the UK in August for a headline tour and The Long Road Festival. What can UK audiences expect from your live shows?

I absolutely loved C2C which is why I’m back for this tour. It’s just going to be me and a guitar except for one show in Ireland with their house band. I’m leaving my band in the US. Just me and a guitar getting out there and trying to meet people. Let them get to know me and me know them. I just want to be as close to y’all as possible to tell ya some stories and shake your hands. It’s going to be awesome. I love the UK.

Thanks for your time!

Thank ya too!!
