Causier, a Leicester native, recently unveiled his latest single, 'So Far,' featuring his labelmate Erin LeCount. Following the release of this collaborative track, we had the opportunity to interview Causier and delve deeper into his journey as an artist.
1. Hey, thanks for joining us, we love the new single ’So Far’ - what was the inspiration behind the track and how did the collaboration with Erin LeCount come about?
Hi, thanks for listening, I appreciate your interest. The song was inspired by experiences with “young love” and my bittersweet understanding that love is finite. It sounds cynical when I put it like that, but at the same time I’m talking about giving in to it and exploring that relationship regardless of where it might go. Erin heard the demo and said she liked it so we asked her to be on the track and we met up and recorded her part in one session. I love the collaboration as Erin’s part is like a reply to my own, which I feel really suits the conversational tone of my vocal.
?2. You grew up in Leicester, what was the music scene like growing up in Leicester?
The scene in Leicester felt small. I played in a couple of different bands as a kid and played a lot of the venue circuit. I moved to London when I was 18 and have been working here since. Although, most of the people I work with and hang out with here are from Leicester as well. So in some ways, it feels like I never really left.
?3. When did you first realize you could play an instrument and write songs?
My dad taught me guitar when I was very young. But I mostly taught myself after he showed me the basics- I never had any sort of classical training. I wrote my first song when I was probably 6 or 7 years old.
?4. Your influences flow between contemporary and classic artists - how do these artists impact your songwriting?
This is true. I have an eclectic taste, I like most genres of music. I would say this impacts my decisions when composing a song as I enjoy drawing from two different artists that sound nothing alike. For example, what if I sing a Bloc Party indi-vocal on this Sunship garage-beat. I find that really enjoyable.
?5. You write, play and produce - do you think artists nowadays need to do everything to be heard?
Not especially, lots of artists I enjoy only do vocals or produce. I think what matters is making good music and that doesn’t have any fixed way of happening.
?6. What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to you younger self?
There are a lot of different answers to this question, some personal, some more practical. But I would have to say that I’m happy with where I am right now, and so I am happy with all the mistakes I have made along the way.
?7. If you could create a dream festival headliner - who would be on it?
Right now it would be Mk.Gee, Cruza and CASISDEAD. But if you ask me that a week from now the answers would probably change.
?8. What’s next for you? What do you hope to achieve in 2024?
Up to now, I’ve been seeking adventure with my music and I’ve explored a lot. Next year I have a fixed destination in mind and I want to explore that destination more intensely and craft a live experience more thoroughly at the same time.
