Irish Country artist Megan O’neill is about to release her latest single “Rootless” on October 25th. The song is from her forthcoming album.
Rootless has a nice reflective and uplifting feel to it - with the song being about O’neill feeling rootless living in London whilst having strong roots in Ireland; the sound is perfect for the theme.
The song was produced by her long term collaborators The Dunwells, and within the guitar intro of Rootless, I felt you can hear slight hints of their tone and style. The song progresses into a steady drum beat with light use of occasional keys, which O’neill also plays. Faint banjo can be heard too. The vocals are great throughout, especially in the chorus when she holds long notes. Her voice in general has an old school, traditional feel to it.
The song itself could appeal to a wider-audience, having a country-pop feel. It doesn’t feel designed for just hardcore country fans.
Lyrics from the song-
I’m not lost, not erased, but my roots can be traced, I’ll never stay in one place for long enough, I’m Rootless
About the song, Megan says: “I think we can all relate to the feeling of wanting to go and pack a bag and run away and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes we need that escape from reality and everyday life”
About her own roots, she says:
I love Ireland and I do feel a strong connection with it on every level - especially as I’ve got older”
Labelled by the Irish Times as “The Irish Carrie Underwood”, Megan has just finished touring with Sir Tom Jones and has covered the UK’s top Country Festivals, including Country 2 Country, The British Country Music Festival and Body & Soul. She has also previously played Black Deer Festival and The Long Road Festival. Establishing her name firmly in the UK Country scene, her single “Ghost of You” made it to the UK & Ireland iTunes number one position, and her song ‘Don’t You’ was featured on the hit TV series Nashville. I was also impressed with Megan when I watched her at The British Country Music Festival, review here.
