British rap has evolved steadily over the last 40 years and is more mainstream now than ever. It's getting young people into a genre of music that they can really relate to.
Mist’s journey to present has, at times been hard, a recent robbery whilst performing in Portugal resulted in a gunshot wound, not to mention a stint in prison just prior to finding his way within the music industry. But rap music has, and will always give opportunities to showcase talent and Mist has done just that since his emergence onto the scene following his 2016 release of his debut EP, MIS to the T.
What Savage does for Mist, is create an image of a rapper who has lived a life like his idols, Snoop Dog or The Notorious B.I.G, bringing in money that Rap has allowed him to do and be surrounded by people who respect and admire him for what he does. The music for Savage is powerful in its simplicity. The beat which the rhyme sits over booms with power. With what feels like a reference to Mist’s 2019 robbery, gunshots are used as added percussion and gives the piece a darker, more underworld feel, which if you watch the video is well achieved through smart and precise production. The lead rap flows smoothly and the use of background vocals, whether sampled higher melodic singing, to male leads and backing, provide a classic backdrop to a developed song, that whilst short in length, does exactly what it needs to do to sell the record.
Rappers often put on a voice to mimic others, the greats don’t. The greats feel the rhyme, they have a natural sense for the rhythm and they know how to deliver the punch of the groove. And it is that reason that makes each song different. What Mist does fantastically is be himself in his work. His lyrics are true to him, they are true to rap music, yet still deeply original. His vocal is real, not put on, to the extent that his accent still comes through. The song might be called Savage, but the artist has created a unique intricate work of art that will mark a new and exciting journey in the musical career of Mist.
